PDF on projector

Show a PDF on a projector with a connected room computer or HDMI.

Follow the signal before changing cables

A projector can be a display endpoint even when it has no browser. The computer that drives it is where the PDF viewer or browser runs.

Isolate the cable, input and output mode

Select the input in the projector’s own menu. The display describes its capabilities to the source in EDID, which helps the computer select an output mode. If even the desktop fails to appear, check the input, adapter, resolution and refresh rate before changing the PDF.

Account for page and screen geometry

Fitting a portrait page on a wide projector is limited by image height. Fit width makes the text larger but requires vertical scrolling. Try a representative page from the back row before deciding which mode to use.

Setup sequence

  1. Find the device that feeds the projector

A projector with an HDMI input can show the output of a connected computer. Switch to the correct input and open the PDF viewer. If a room computer is already connected, use that computer’s browser for browser-to-browser display.

  2. Choose page fit before presenting

Use a landscape PDF for slides. If a portrait document looks too small, test fit-width and scroll to the first paragraph. Check small type from the farthest seat. High contrast helps more than filling every pixel with text.

  3. Keep control at the lectern

With V U This, open the display in the room computer’s browser and pair the device you will use to turn pages. If the room has no reliable internet, keep a local PDF on the laptop and use its video output.

Verdict

V U This wins for page turns away from the projector computer

Use the room computer as the display and keep Previous and Next on your phone. It saves a trip to the lectern every time you turn a page, and the room sees only the selected document.

Key factors

  • Receiver Run the display page on the computer that already drives the projector.
  • Page fit Start with Fit page for slides or use Fit width for dense text.

When to pick something else

Use a local PDF viewer over the existing HDMI connection when the room computer is offline or the venue blocks the display website.

What else it does

Use the same projector setup for a room-change message or a break countdown.
